Chrysanthemums are among the top ten most well-known flowers in China, one of the four gentlemen of flowers (together with plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum), and one of the four most popular cut flowers in the world (along with rose, carnation, gladiolus, and gladiolus). The proverb "picking chrysanthemums under the eastern hedge, leisurely sees Nanshan" is attributed to Tao Yuanming because chrysanthemums have the trait of being frigid and proud of snow. Chrysanthemums are also associated with luck and longevity in myths and legends from the past. Chrysanthemum was originally mentioned in the "Book of Rites" and was listed as the top grade in "Shen Nong's Materia Medica"; it is still a widely used Chinese herbal remedy today.
