Product details of Windscreen Replacement

Replacing a windshield, also known as a windscreen in some regions, is a task that should be done by a professional auto glass technician. It's a complex and critical job that requires specialized tools and expertise to ensure the safety and integrity of your vehicle.

Safety Precautions: Safety is of utmost importance in windshield replacement. Professionals typically follow these precautions:

  • Wear safety glasses and gloves to protect against glass shards.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked in a well-ventilated area.
  • Disconnect the vehicle's battery to prevent accidental deployment of airbags during the process.

Procedure:

  • Assessment and Preparation: The technician will inspect the damaged windshield to assess the extent of the damage and ensure that replacement is necessary. They will prepare the work area and remove any obstructions.
  • Protect the Vehicle: The technician will place protective coverings over the vehicle's interior and exterior to prevent damage during the replacement process.
  • Removal of Old Windshield: Using specialized auto glass tools, the technician will carefully remove the old windshield. They will cut through the adhesive that holds the windshield in place and remove any old glass fragments.
  • Clean the Frame: The frame where the windshield will be placed needs to be clean and free of old adhesive. The technician may use a utility knife or scraper to remove any residue.
  • Priming (if required): Some adhesive manufacturers recommend applying a sealant primer to the frame before applying the adhesive. The technician will follow the manufacturer's guidelines if primer is needed.
  • Install New Windshield: The new windshield is carefully positioned and aligned with the vehicle's frame. The technician will use specialized glass-handling tools to handle the new windshield and ensure it's correctly placed.
  • Adhesive Application: The technician will apply a specific urethane adhesive designed for automotive glass around the frame. This adhesive serves to bond the windshield securely to the vehicle's body.
  • Setting the Windshield: The new windshield is pressed firmly into the adhesive, ensuring it's securely attached. Proper alignment is crucial.
  • Cleanup and Molding (if applicable): Any excess adhesive is cleaned up, and the windshield molding, if present, is installed.
  • Curing and Drying: The adhesive requires time to cure and set properly. The vehicle may need to remain stationary for a specified period, as per the adhesive manufacturer's instructions.
  • Quality Check: The technician will conduct a quality check to ensure the windshield is securely in place, and the adhesive has properly cured. They will also clean the windshield and inspect it for any defects.
  • Reconnect the Battery: The vehicle's battery is reconnected if it was disconnected earlier.
  • Test the Windshield: The technician will test the windshield to ensure it functions correctly, such as the wipers and defrosters.
