The art of garden making may have been imported from China or Korea, where it is highly respected. In the 5th century, their main feature was a pond with an island connected to the shore by bridges, as later references to these precedents in Emperor show. Japanese gardens are characterized by the waterfall, of which there are ten or more different configurations, the source and the stream from which it springs; the lake, mounds built of earth excavated from the basin for the lake, islands, bridges of many kinds, and the natural guardian stones.
